Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370712 AB OBJECTIVE: To formulate a model for community awareness generation for AIDS control through YOUTH TO YOUTH Communication Strategy on Voluntary Basis. METHOD: One hundred boys and girls from Undergraduate/Postgraduate classes were selected to form 10 core groups and identified as members of Voluntary Core Group(VCG). These were oriented about spread & control of HIV transmission. Simultaneously, they were trained about ways and means to communicate this message in community through one-to-one and one-to-many communication strategies. They were asked to identify High Risk Behaviour (HRB) groups of their own interest and formulate their own strategies. The various activities of VCG were then supervised. RESULTS: Number of stalls, poster exhibitions, orientation talks etc. were organised by VCG, touching nearly every corner of the city, specially urban slums. Counselling and free distribution of condoms to those who needed was the highlight. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The enthusiastic participation of the youth for the programme on voluntary basis was well above the mark. The ever increasing number of participants in their group discussions is further infusing encouragement into them.
